After the settling dust of their live performance, Arkive seized the opportunity to connect with St. Pete indie-rock band, The Pilot Waves. Nestled in the backroom of Bananas Records, we spoke with Tristan, the vocalist/guitarist, Rob, handling bass duties, and TC, on drums, delving into topics ranging from the release of their debut album on vinyl to their current endeavors and life beyond the music scene.
vinyl debut
Reflecting on the unveiling of their debut album, “Aion,” in vinyl format, Tristan shared his sentiments, reminiscing on the profound moment. “It was a pretty incredible experience,” he mused, recalling the culmination of years of hard work. For The Pilot Waves, the decision to release their music on vinyl transcended mere nostalgia; it was a deliberate homage to the art of attentive listening.
Elaborating on their approach to crafting the album, Tristan explained, “When we were constructing the record, we thought a lot about how it sounds as a cohesive piece of music.” He emphasized the significance of vinyl in fostering a deeper listening experience. “It gets me in a different mode when I’m listening to an album on vinyl, and that’s how I want the experience to be for this record.”
Rob echoed this sentiment, expressing his delight at hearing their music in the vinyl format for the first time. “I’ve never had a piece of music that I’ve recorded on vinyl. It really is the best format. It sounds better.”
TC chimed in, emphasizing the tangible depth and richness that vinyl lends to their sound. “Vinyl feels like it goes about 50 feet in front of you, the depth of field, the fullness of it, it really makes quite a difference to me.”
Looking Ahead
Transitioning to discussions about their forthcoming sophomore album, the band remained tight-lipped about specifics but TC let us know they’re ‘hunkering down’. “We’re currently in the demoing phase. There’s no title yet, but it’s an expansion of our sound.” Tristan did reveal, hinting at a departure from their debut while maintaining a cohesive trajectory.
Rob expressed enthusiasm for the creative freedom afforded by TC’s home studio, where they are currently crafting new material. “We’re working on some cool stuff, and I’m really enjoying the process. It’s been fun to just sit down and relax and not worry about time, or having to spend money on a recording studio.”
Beyond the Music
Away from the studio and stage, The Pilot Waves find inspiration in the serenity of nature. Rob shared their penchant for adventure, recounting band excursions such as kayaking trips and impromptu pool parties. “We go out on band excursions where we go kayaking. We go to concerts sometimes. Other than that, we just like to hang out. Sometimes we get together and have a day, like a pool party at our house.”
With their debut album on vinyl standing as a testament to their artistry and a sophomore release on the horizon, The Pilot Waves remain steadfast in their commitment to exploring new sonic frontiers, inviting listeners on an unforgettable journey through the realms of indie rock.
