Johnny Champagne’s CHRISTIAN is the culmination of three years of spiritual and artistic growth. From soulful live performances to intimate recordings, this album captures his journey of faith, self-discovery, and the power of embracing uncertainty.

Johnny Champagne is not just a name—it’s an entire ethos. Behind it stands Christian John Tapper, an artist who defies categorization. Singer, rapper, producer, DJ, engineer, pianist, and worship leader, Johnny is a multifaceted creative force. His recently released album, CHRISTIAN, is the culmination of three transformative years. It’s a project that marries solitude with community, introspection with performance, and vulnerability with faith.

CHRISTIAN is so much more than just an album release. It’s a statement of purpose, a reflection of personal growth, and a bold declaration of faith. “This album and the three years it took to make it represent the process of seeking and finding God,” Johnny wrote in an Instagram post. But it also represents his journey as an artist, one who has learned to find his voice both in the quiet of his room and in the energy of live performances.

From Bedroom Beats to Stage Mastery

Johnny’s musical roots run deep. “I started making music in my room,” he says. “I really love making music in my room.” For years, that space was his creative haven, where he could experiment and refine his sound. But with CHRISTIAN, Johnny knew he had to push beyond those four walls.

“What I had to do this time around was different,” he explains. Over the past year, he’s been performing many of the album’s tracks live, using the stage as a testing ground. Each performance became a feedback loop, reshaping the songs in real-time. “I made a lot of these songs over a year ago, but I’ve been performing them live for over a year—figuring out how my voice fits, getting to know the songs live, seeing how people react to them.”

The impact of these live performances was profound. Johnny quickly realized that his initial vocal approach wasn’t connecting the way he’d hoped. “I had recorded many of the demos in the lower register of my voice,” he says. “I thought the calm delivery would complement the jazzy instrumentals, but it wasn’t getting across to the audience in the way that I wanted.” One song in particular, “I’m Blessed,” became a turning point.

“I noticed that people listened more intently and personally expressed to me how much more impacted they were when I decided to raise the tone and the energy to a higher register,” Johnny recalls. “I realized that I had to convey this same energy in the recorded version of the music , This revelation led to a series of re-recordings, including tracks like “Christian,” “Swing Low,” and “Said U Gon’.” The result? An album that feels as alive and dynamic as Johnny’s performances.

A Season of Self-Discovery

While live feedback shaped the sound of CHRISTIAN, the album’s heart lies in Johnny’s personal journey. The themes of faith, self-discovery, and resilience didn’t come from a single moment but from a season of profound reflection.

“I was living in New York right after graduating from college and was spending a lot of time reflecting on my past and manifesting the person and musician I wanted to become,” he says. “I was supporting myself completely for the first time and searching for God in a post-COVID chaotic world.” Johnny found inspiration in old music, sampling tracks whose lyrics spoke to him. “Almost coincidentally, I noticed the subject matter of my music dealing with the process of seeking, finding, and even running away from God.”

The title track, “Christian,” became a cornerstone of the album. Built around a jazz sample from Mary Lou Williams, the song encapsulates Johnny’s spiritual journey. “The first line, ‘My name is Christian, I was born on a Sunday,’ came to me months before the rest of the song,” he recalls. “I learned through a digital birthday tool that I was indeed born on a Sunday. It felt like a divinely timed coincidence.”

This sense of divine timing permeates the album. Each song feels like a step on a path of self-discovery, with Johnny using music as a means of processing life’s challenges and affirming his faith.

The Tracks That Define CHRISTIAN

Every track on CHRISTIAN tells its own story, but a few stand out as personal favorites for Johnny. “Babylon’s Oven” holds a special place in his heart. “It’s like a hug at the end of a long day,” he says.

Lyrically, the song is a declaration of perseverance: “I hold my hand to the fire and hold my head to the sky, it’s fuck the feds, love the guys, just like bread gonna rise.” Johnny breaks it down with vivid imagery: “It creates a visceral image of baking under the heat and pressure of this evil world’s ‘oven’ yet still coming out of it better than I started.”

The track was inspired by a sample of Penny Goodwin’s “Rain Sometimes”. “It has a similar message—that sometimes things are good and sometimes things are bad, but love is eternal,” Johnny says. “I chose the part where she says ‘There will be Champagne sometimes’ because it made me feel like I personally was truly meant to sample the song.”

A New Chapter

Now that CHRISTIAN is out, Johnny is taking a moment to reflect on the journey it represents. “I’ve become much more self-aware, I’m a better performer, and I’m closer to God,” he says. “But I’m still the same dude at the end of the day.”

For Johnny, releasing this album is a milestone, but not the finish line. With every track, CHRISTIAN delivers a sense of purpose, showing how music can inspire, connect, and transform. It’s not just a project—it’s a glimpse into Johnny Champagne’s heart, and it’s only the beginning of what he has to share.
